Description

I had never fully understood the size of Gallimimus until I started doing research for this drawing. Even after watching a stampeding flock of them hundreds of times in a certain Spielberg movie, I didn't realize they were as long as 8 meters and about 2 meters tall at the hip. If they were still alive today I can imagine people riding them through the Gobi desert like some sort of ostrich/camel/reptile-thing.

Note: It is now known (as of 10/26/12) that ornithomimids possessed pennibrachia, aka wing feathers, so this piece is outdated. Might do an updated version sometime.

Colors and patterns based on Thomson's gazelle, Eudorcas thomsonii.

Actually this may not be outdated after all. The idea of Ornithomimids have wing feathers is not entirely set in stone.

In 2014, Christian Foth and others argued that the evidence was insufficient to conclude that the forelimb feathers of Ornithomimus were necessarily pennaceous, citing the fact that the monofilamentous wing feathers in cassowaries would likely leave similar traces.
